I, WONG KO SHI, of Yi Chau, Ku Ching, am maker of
this deed for the sale of my daughter. Now WONG has
died leaving me his wife and a daughter behind, poor,
unable to earn our livelihood, and without anybody to
rely upon. Now I, KO SHI, wife of WONG am badly in
need of money to meet expenses for food. Being unable
to raise it anywhere, I am willing to sell my own
daughter AH LIN aged 11 born on the 17th day of the 1st
moon between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to somebody else in order
to acquire money to meet my expenses. The girl was
first offered to my relatives but none of them had money
in hand. Later the girl was introduced by a go-between
to CHIU NGOI LEE TONG, at Chi Kai, who agreed to take
her. Due stipulation and agreement were made between
all parties and a price of $240 was offered me by the
CHIU NGOI LEE TONG. The deed was made and transaction
completed on this very day. The price was fully paid
to me WONG KO SHI who received it personally to meet her
expenses and not a single cash was left unpaid. The
girl was also handed over to CHIU NGOI LEE TONG on the
very day to take home who shall have the right to change
her name and make her wait on them. When she grows up,
the purchaser shall also have the right to get her
married either as a wife or a concubine, and no inter-
ference shall be allowed. After the girl is sold, no
retraction or redemption shall be allowed. This is an
open sale and purchase and is not a case of kidnapping.
In case of any mystery as to the origin of the girl, the
seller of the girl shall settle it with the go-between
and the purchaser shall not be responsible. After the
girl is sold, each party shall acquiesce in Heaven's
decree in case of any misfortune. To avoid the un-
reliability of a verbal promise, this deed is made as
proof.
